Does Saffron Milk Make Baby Fair? Myth vs Facts

It’s one of the most common questions in clinic: “Kesar doodh peene se baby gora hoga?”

The short, honest answer: no. And that’s okay – let’s talk about why, without any judgment.

Where the belief comes from

Saffron (kesar) is precious, warming and deeply tied to celebration and care. Offering it to a pregnant woman is a gesture of love. The belief that it changes the baby’s complexion is cultural, not medical.

What actually determines skin colour

Your baby’s skin tone is decided by genetics – the inherited combination from both parents. No food, drink or cream changes that. Saffron milk is safe in normal amounts, but it works on tradition, not on melanin.

So is saffron milk bad?

Not at all. In moderation it’s perfectly fine, and if it helps you sleep or feel cared for, enjoy it. What we gently push back on is the pressure and the guilt that can come with these beliefs.

What truly matters in pregnancy nutrition

  • Folic acid and iron, as prescribed
  • Enough protein and a balanced plate
  • Hydration and adequate rest
  • Your regular antenatal scans and check-ups

At Blossom Women Wellness Clinic, we focus on what actually matters – your health, your baby’s development, and evidence-based pregnancy care.

Break the myth, not your confidence. A healthy baby is the goal – not a particular skin colour.

Have a “my elder told me…” question? Bring it to your next visit. No question is too small, and nothing you ask will be judged.
